Punta Cana Hurricanes

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic has a very nice warm tropical climate. A tropical climate like this one implies lots of sun and sometimes rain. However one thing that will never bother you in the tropic is the snow which is the reason why many tourists prefer to go a tropical area when going on vacation. You can expect warm temperatures during the whole year; it will only get a bit colder during the winter season but just slightly.

Only during hurricane season is when you have to be really aware of the weather here. Hurricane season starts in June and ends the last day of November. Even then hurricanes have appeared in the Atlantic Ocean before June and after November. You do not have to worry too much because the probability of a hurricane to hit the Dominican Republic is low. In 80 years the Dominican Republic has been hit by 11 hurricanes. They are Jeanne, Georges, Hortense, Gilbert, Emily, David, Beulah, Ines, Edith, Katie, and San Zenon. These hurricanes have hit the Dominican Republic between the months of August and October. September is the most dangerous month in respect to hurricanes. Of the 11 hurricanes that have affected the Dominican Republic 9 have been on September.

One of them hit on August and the other one hit on October. One detail to notice this is the count for hurricanes only; there are tropical systems of less intensity like tropical storms and tropical depressions that have hit the Dominican Republic with more frequency. Tropical storms have hit the Dominican Republic outside hurricane season like the case of tropical storm Olga that hit on December. Even when tropical storms are not as powerful as hurricanes they still have to be considered as a threat. Most of the resorts on the island are prepared to act in case of any tropical system that might hit the island. Since the experience of the past hurricanes they have installed underground phone lines and prepared the infrastructure better to withstand the impact.

In most cases the resort management will send you to another resort far from the main affected area to spend the rest of your vacation. Still the probability of one system to hit the island in the moment that are vacationing there is quite low. The best measure to avoid any tropical inconvenience is to travel after October or before August. This way your vacation has an extreme low chance of being ruined by a storm.

It’s Monsoon Again!

In another article, I wrote about the excitement that spring brings to those who live in temperate climates, but what of people who live in the tropics? Contrary to the notion of many, the tropics do have seasons too. And although these seasons are by no means uniform, a three-season pattern of hot, wet, and ‘cool’ is quite common. In Thailand, for example, the hot season is the tropical equivalent to a winter. I remember travelling through northern Thailand at the end of the hot, dry, season, and if it weren’t for the soaring heat, from the train you might think you were seeing winter in a Mediterranean climate. A great many trees shed their leaves during this season (just as deciduous trees do in the winter), and regain them when the rains come.

In Chiang Mai, Thailand, you’d expect the people to be accustomed to this heat but on the contrary, they seem to hate this season and grumble about it just as Northerners grumble about the winter.

Then the day comes when there are thunderclaps, the temperature drops about ten degrees, and buckets of water pour down from the sky, causing great delight and joy from the people in the street. Soon after the monsoon begins the water festival is held. It’s a joyous and raucous affair, and everyone is drenched from being splashed by the buckets of water that are freely distributed to anyone with hands to reach.

The water festival, like nearly all festivals in Thailand, is a Buddhist rite, but I suspect that its origins go back far further. In these parts of the world, the onset of the monsoon is always a joyous time of year. It ensures another good harvest, and that fruits and vegetables will soon be plentiful once again. Conversely, should a monsoon fail, a feeling of dread and fear darkens the land, for it could very well mean famine. Hooray for the monsoon!

What to Do in Punta Cana

The longest coral reef in the entire island, standing at about some 35 kilometer’s long is in the Punta Cana. The shores which are nicely cut out at select areas of the reef makes Punta Cana snorkeling a memorable one. A variety of snorkeling activities one can engage in can include a snorkeling excursion with a group out to the Aquarium towards the reef of El Cortecito or take a guided snorkeling tour through the warm waters, giving you an introduction to the colorful marine life of the Caribbean. Below are the activities I partook off and it was worth every bit of it.

Caribbean Festival Snorkel – This constitutes snorkeling around the Bavaro coastline. The popular snorkeling site along the Bavaro presents a view of sharks and rays, although a guided snorkeling activity is best yet. If you are on a cruise, then timely light refreshments and a Caribbean dance show for your entertainment awaits you on-board, endeavor to join in and feel the spirit of the Caribbean. They can be heavenly. The Marinariun Shark and ray experience – Experience the beauty of the underwater world as you swim and snorkel along the coral reefs of Punta Cana, becoming intimate with the giant sting rays and “homely” sharks. Then try the natural pools where you may want to enjoy a beautiful cocktail With something for everyone including the family. Get to know the native marine life, get your snorkeling equipment and receive safety instructions from the Park supervisors. I will advice you start by snorkeling with some of the friendlier creatures of the deep before taking the plunge and entering the domain of the sharks. Catalina Island Snorkeling – You can discover the untouched beauty of the Island of Catalina, snorkeling on some of the most amazing coral reefs amongst the abundance of colorful animal and plant life. The clear turquoise water is perfect for snorkeling. From an anchor point directly above a coral reef, you can enjoy the best underwater view. After the amazing views of the colorful sea life, you can have lunch on the white beach of the Island of Catalina. Punta Cana Snorkeling for starters – If you have never snorkeled before and are feeling uneasy about the experience, then this short trip serves a perfect introduction to the popular water sport. You will visit one of the shallow reefs, protected from the open ocean by its corals. Enjoy the incredible daily live in the crystal clear sea. Use of snorkeling equipment and a local guide are included on this easy Punta Cana activity, just in case you have not got one. You can enjoy a slow and relaxing sail – From Punta Cana over the crystalline-like waters along the stunning white coast line of the Bavaro making a detour around the wreck of Astron, a freighter that lies close to the shore. Along the sail you can see a cluster of barracuda, blue fishes and yellow tail snapper. You can decide to make arrangements for this adventures as you prepare for your holiday. You may want to individually pick on one after another to enjoy, it is completely up to you as the former is as memorable as the next especially if Punta Cana Snorkeling is just your priority.

Long after the original excitement of Christmas Day was started to wind down, you want your wife or girlfriend to absolutely radiate with love when she thinks about what an awesome Christmas gift she has just received. One of the most meaningful Christmas gifts you can give to your significant other is to create an unforgettable experience that she will never forget. And so, rather than buying her a designer bag or new trinket that will get stashed in the back of the closet within a few month’s time, why not surprise her with a romantic couples weekend getaway for Christmas?

Romantic Weekend Getaways for Couples – Favorite Locations

There are definitely some considerations to make when determining a destination for your romantic vacation getaway. Have you ever vacationed before as a couple? Does the like the glitz and glamour of the big city? Has she been dying to ski down the bunny slopes at a ski resort? Is she into the total luxury and relaxation you can get from a weekend’s worth of massages and spa treatments? Or is she more into the understated quality time spent together at a bed and breakfast? Of course some popular romantic vacation destinations include the beaches of South Florida, the Poconos, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, or even the resorts of Sedona, Arizona.

An international trip may be out of the question for a quick turnaround of a weekend, but she may also appreciate you taking out the time to plan a week-long trip to somewhere romantic like Paris or Rome. Other popular destinations are of the all-inclusive resort variety – think Ochos Rios or Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic – or even a cruise across the Grand Bahamas or to Cozumel. If you’re thinking cruise, make sure she doesn’t get freaked out by being out on the open sea or worse, that she easily gets seasick, because this could be an absolute killer of whatever romantic moments you were planning on sharing with her.

Romantic weekend getaway packages are a great idea to give as a Christmas gift for your honey. Getting the Best Snorkeling Equipment For a Perfect Snorkeling Experience

Snorkeling is a lot of fun, but before you go into the water, there is a couple of things you need to know. You need to choose your snorkeling equipment carefully and properly learn how to use it. Let’s consider some of these equipment.

Snorkeling Mask:

How do you know if a mask fits well? Take your snorkeling mask and put on your face as if you are going to wear it, then you try to breathe in through your nose and see if the mask sucks up against your face without leaking air. If the mask will stay on your face when you let go of your hands then you probably have gotten a good fit.

Snorkel:

Another nice piece of equipment to have is the snorkel. Well you do not have to have a snorkel, its just that it is really tiring to constantly lift you head up out of the water to breathe, so a snorkel solves that problem. There are several type of snorkels, amongst a variety is a special kind of that has a little float at the upper end. What it does is that when you go under the water the float closes off so the snorkel doesn’t fill up with water. It is particularly a nice type to have as you can enjoy an extended stay under the water.

Snorkeling Fins:

Another nice piece of snorkeling equipment to have is a pair of snorkeling fin. Now if you are in really shallow water say two to four feet deep, you might not need the fins. But if you are in water that is a little bit deep or if you want to cover a wider area then its nice to have fins because they help you glide effortlessly through the water and when you are snorkeling you want to be very relaxed and just try not to work too hard so you can enjoy it.

Generally, just about any sandy beach for instance in Florida is going to be a good snorkeling when the water is clear, there are also few places where there are natural geographical features that makes snorkeling even more fun. Moving further north to the Tampa bay area there is the Egmont Key, another great place will be the St Andrews state park in Northwest Florida near Panama city. Otherwise, you may want to go book a snorkeling holiday abroad with interesting experiences like with the Punta Cana snorkeling or you may want to try snorkeling in Cabo for a change of scene and refreshing experience.

Now we have learned how to choose our snorkeling equipment and how to use them and how to go out on the water and thrive in one of our going to be best snorkeling experience.

How To Find A Place To Live In Dominican Republic

First you have to examine what is more suitable for your needs: a house or an apartment. If you are thinking of a house you will have more privacy, but also more responsibility. You will need to install an alarm system, gas for your stove or oven, if it is not furnished you need to buy all the furniture, also a generator or inverter because of all the blackouts in the country. All those appliances add more costs to your purchase price or you have the option of buying or renting a furnished house and avoiding the headache of buying all the furniture.

If you are thinking of an apartment you have the same options, to buy or rent, furnished or unfurnished, new or previously owned. All those choices will modify the price of the apartment. The least expensive option is a previously owned unfurnished apartment in a neighborhood outside the city. You can find surprising prices, for instance, I am selling one with 3 bedrooms for US$46,000. The down side of this option is that there will be more blackouts and noise in this area.

The most expensive option is an apartment located in the central zone of the city like: Naco, Piantini, Serralles, and Evaristo Morales, among others. Those kinds of apartments sometimes are furnished and most likely come with generators, lobby, parking spaces, and security staff and are constructed with premium materials. The price range is US$1,200 per square meters, so if you want an apartment of 200 meters you will most likely pay US$240,000 and will rent it for US$1,500.

If what you are looking for is beaches Dominican Republic has many options: the world known Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Puerto Plata and a paradise yet to be discovered by the world: Samana. The prices of these properties vary if they have beach front or by their distance from the beach. The closer to the beach, the higher the price will be. We cannot forget about the astonishing properties of Casa de Campo and Cap Cana with all the golf courses designed by the famous golf player Jack Nicklaus. These are perfect properties if you are coming for retirement in paradise.

Lastly, you need to find a reliable and qualified person to help you find those properties that can speak your language to help you mediate the purchase or rent negotiations. This person is a Real Estate Agent that ideally is associated with a know company, so you can avoid the numerous scams that are out there, because you won’t be able to read the deeds and you don’t know the Dominican laws, and that can make you an easy target for scams.

I hope I can help you find the property of your dreams and that I can answer any question not covered in this article. Go to my blog and leave me a comment or write me with your concerns.
